All or Nothing — play a slice, win a pizza

not checked yet

Each player tries to complete a 12-slice pizza by adding or removing slices. In this simple arithmetic game, all age-groups can have quick fun. Adding or subtracting pizza slices feels like the tussle for resources that we face in life. This tussle can be won by individuals who wait and watch — with alertness, foresight and luck. Winning too early, gives less points (as the number of cards in the play space decide the points).

From All or Nothing, a card game by Prayas Abhinav.

What it shows a designer

Completing the pizza early scores fewer points, so waiting is rewarded. It shows how one scoring rule can turn a simple arithmetic race into a game of pushing your luck.

What you need

  • 48 cards: print them from https://github.com/prayasabhinav/games/raw/main/all-or-nothing/print/all-or-nothing-cards.pdf (one card to a page) with the back from https://github.com/prayasabhinav/games/raw/main/all-or-nothing/print/all-or-nothing-card-back.pdf , or write them on paper: green +1 (6 cards), +2 (12), +3 (6); red −1, −2 and −3 (2 each); black ±4, ±5, ±6 and ±7 (4 each); one 'On the house' card and one 'Double order' card
  • paper to keep scores

How to play

  1. Party scene. There is a 12-slice pizza on the table. All the players want the entire pizza to themselves. Each player holds 4 cards; the other cards are the deck.
  2. A turn. Play one card into the centre and pick one card from the deck. Start the game with any green card.
  3. The cards. Green cards add slices. Red cards remove slices. Black cards add or remove, as you wish; say which while playing.
  4. Say the count. After playing a card, say the number of pizza slices in the centre: '3 + 2 = 5'. The number of slices cannot be less than 0 or more than 12.
  5. Extra hungry cards. Double order: the players have to complete 24 slices to win this round. On the house: a coupon for this round; if you complete the pizza, you score double the number of cards in the centre, and if another player completes it, your card is wasted.
  6. Win a round. Whoever completes the 12 slices wins the round and scores one point for each card in the centre. Shuffle all the cards except those in players' hands, and begin the next round. The game can continue till you are full with pizzas.
  7. Two ways to play. Simple: hold your 4 cards in your hand, hidden. Challenge: place your 4 cards face up for the other players to see. Knowing everyone's cards means you have to plan ahead to win, but it also means more points.

After playing, talk about

  • When did you hold back from completing the pizza, to let the centre grow?
  • Did a red card feel like taking a slice from someone?
  • How did the Challenge way, with cards face up, change your play?
